Signs you need downspouts and drainage
- Water or damp soil against the foundation after rain
- A wet crawlspace or basement every spring
- A downspout dumping onto a walkway that ices over in winter
- Erosion or a trench in the mulch below a downspout
- One downspout carrying water for a run that needs two
- Extensions that get kicked off or run over by the mower
How a downspouts and drainage call works
Walk the property in the direction water runs and find where each downspout ends up
Written quote: added downspouts, larger outlets, extensions, splash blocks, or a buried line to daylight or a dry well
Install, with buried lines in solid pipe, not corrugated, and pop-up emitters where the line ends
Hose test from the roof down so you see water come out the far end
Questions about downspouts and drainage
How far from the house should water go?
At least four to six feet, and farther on clay soil or where the grade slopes back toward the house. A buried line to daylight is the cleanest fix.
Why solid pipe instead of the black corrugated kind?
Corrugated pipe crushes, holds silt in the ridges, and cannot be cleaned out. Solid PVC can be snaked and lasts.
Can you tie into my sump or French drain?
Sometimes. Roof water stays separate from foundation drains where the code or the soil calls for it, and we explain which applies to your house.
